How to Vote
Ways to Vote
Early Voting
Many states allow voters to vote early. Early voting allows voters to cast their ballots at an in-person location before Election Day. Early voting has many benefits for voters, including avoiding long lines on Election Day and making voting more convenient to voters’ schedules.
Vote by Mail or by Absentee Ballot
Many states allow voters to register to vote by mail or via absentee ballot. Vote by mail or absentee voting allows voters to cast their ballots remotely without visiting a polling place.
Election Day Voting
This happens at polling places and may differ from early voting options and can be dependent on where you are registered to vote.
Provisional Voting
If a voter is unable to vote using a regular ballot, federal law gives them the right to cast a provisional ballot, as long as the voter believes they are eligible and have been registered as required.
Voter's Bill of Rights
- Vote if you are a U.S. citizen, at least 18 years old, and are not barred because of a criminal conviction.*
- Vote at a location that is physically accessible to you.
- Cast a ballot if you are in line before the polls close.
- Vote a provisional or affidavit ballot if your name is not on the voter rolls but you believe you should be registered. (NOTE: The poll worker must provide information on how you can follow up to make sure your provisional or affidavit ballot is counted.)
- Cast a secret ballot, free from intimidation.
- Receive assistance with voting from a person of your choice.**
* Rules vary by state.
** Except your employer or union representative.
Declaración de Derechos del Votante
