Confirm the remaining Latino Cabinet nominees!
Latinos throughout the United States celebrated President Biden’s historic nomination of four qualified and experienced Latinos to serve in his Cabinet as leaders of key departments. The U.S. Senate has confirmed Alejandro Mayorkas as Secretary of the Department of Homeland Security in early February. However, President Biden’s remaining Latino nominees are yet to be confirmed – Secretary-Designate Xavier Becerra, Secretary-Designate Miguel Cardona and Administrator-Designate Isabel Guzman. Latinos are the nation’s second largest population group, and it is imperative Latinos are fully represented throughout our government, especially in senior leadership positions where their valuable insight will be key in addressing the issues our country faces. Given the challenges facing Latinos and all Americans, it is unacceptable that Cabinet agencies such as the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) , the Department of Education, and the U.S. Small Business Administration (SBA) remain without qualified leaders.
The delay in confirming these highly qualified Latino leaders is particularly troubling given our nation’s public health and economic crises. The deadly COVID-19 pandemic has affected families, schools, and local businesses throughout the country and its devastating effects have disproportionately hurt the Latino community. Latinos are twice as likely to die from COVID-19 due to lack of access to healthcare and other socioeconomic factors. Families and small businesses in communities of color also continue to struggle with extremely high unemployment rates, and lack adequate COVID-19 relief from the federal government. These unprecedented challenges require immediate action. The U.S. Senate must acknowledge the urgency of these matters and act now to swiftly confirm Xavier Becerra as Secretary of HHS, Dr. Miguel Cardona as Secretary of Education and Isabel Guzman as SBA Administrator.
