Introduction to Robert’s Rules of Order

There are a set of rules and guidelines that are integral to the process of conducting meetings, holding elections, and reaching consensus. These rules guide the practices of individuals to ensure that there is order and that members abide by a set of shared expectations and principles. Being able to effectively and efficiently run and operate within meetings is a vital skill for strong leadership. Parliamentary procedures not only guide the meeting procedures, but most importantly also the political outcomes and decisions. This session will demonstrate the importance of becoming confident and knowledgeable in parliamentary procedures to ensure school board members rightfully participate in the governance process and enhance their leadership skills.

Through an interactive presentation this session will provide participants with an opportunity to apply the content learned from Robert’s Rules of Order.

In order to meet certain outcomes effective leaders can strategically leverage Parliamentary Procedures. Ultimately, Robert’s Rules of Order are designed to establish an unbiased and respectful environment to effectively govern organizations. However, these guidelines may be used for more than maintaining order, they can also be applied to ensure transparency is met and members’ rights are protected. This session will demonstrate how using Robert’s Rules of Order can maximize political objectives and goals.

Equal Educational Opportunities to Learn: The Role of the Federal Government

Over the past several years, the U.S. Department of Education, the Office for Civil Rights, and the U.S. Department of Justice have implemented several strategies to explore the different ways to tackle and resolve the disparities in student academic success that continues to exist across the country. School board members must have the information and tools necessary to determine whether their districts are in compliance with federal law and regulations to ensure that all students have access to a great education. This session will provide an overview of the current educational policies that have been proposed or issued on behalf of the federal government and that are playing out in varying degrees at a local level.

Lessons Learned and the Path Forward: Common Core Standards (CCSS) and Assessment Implementation

As states have implemented the Common Core State Standards (CCSS) or other state-specific learning standards, they have begun to produce preliminary results. Given the important role school board members play in approving the curriculum, tools and systems to invest in, as a matter of accountability it is important that they remain aware of the outcomes of such investments. Initial pilot results have become available outlining student performance on state adopted assessments. This session will provide participants with rich data demonstrating the current status of various student performance indicators that can better inform district decisions as they move forward in the implementation stage of new college and career readiness standards.

Assessment Implementation and Meeting the Needs of English Language Learners

As assessments are being implemented across the country there are certain factors that must be taken into consideration to ensure districts are accurately measuring the progress of all students. However, it is important to recognize that students’ who are attempting to master the acquisition of a second language and learn the content of a new set of college and career readiness standards certain adjustments must be made to build-in reliable and valid assessments for this student population. This session will focus on highlighting the language-specific accommodations and supports that have been extended to effectively measure the content knowledge and linguistic proficiency of English Language Learners.

Session VII:

 

Best Practices: The Challenges and Strategies in Implementing the Common Core State Standards (CCSS)

Within the last several years, districts have been focusing their efforts to implement the new Common Core State Standards (CCSS). Many lessons have been learned during this transitional period. Districts have been tasked to not only identify curricular materials that are aligned to the new set of standards but during this process teachers have also been working diligently to shift their instructional practices to teach to these new set of standards. School board members, in partnership with their superintendent and senior leadership must be able to not only identify and approve resources and materials that will meet the needs of students but they will need to provide the leadership and support teachers require to shift their own instructional practices. This session will facilitate a discussion on the ongoing progress and challenges districts have encountered with the implementation of the CCSS.
