NALEO Educational Fund, in partnership with Arizona State University’s Center for Latina/os and American Politics Research (CLAPR) and the Latino Policy and Politics Initiative (LPPI) at the University of California, Los Angeles, are proud to present the NALEO Education Leadership Academy: Arizona State Legislator Leadership Group.

State policymakers play a critical role in setting policies that can contribute to the academic achievement of students, thereby supporting a more prepared workforce, and ultimately, advancing the economic prosperity of their state.  Latino state legislators have the opportunity to continue to shape and strengthen the future of Arizona through policies that bolster student success and maximize the allocation of limited resources.  To support these efforts, the NALEO Education Leadership Academy: Arizona State Legislator Leadership Group will convene state legislators in a series of highly customized and strategic professional development convenings.

These convenings will provide a meaningful opportunity for participants to gain a deeper knowledge of top education issues in the state and identify policy opportunities to address the needs of Latino students.  Topics will include English Language Learner success, post-secondary access and completion, and workforce development strategies.  Participants will have the opportunity to convene and strategize with members of NALEO’s expansive network and our nation’s leading education academic experts and researchers.  Participants who complete the program will receive a certificate of recognition from our higher education partners – Latina/os and American Politics Research, Arizona State University and Latino Policy and Politics Initiative, University of California, Los Angeles.

The first Institute’s curriculum will cover:

  • Arizona: A Key to Shaping the Nation’s Future
  • Latino Political Leadership: Turning Numbers into Outcomes
  • Budget is Policy- How Arizona’s Budget is Critical for a Policy Agenda
  • Gaining Leadership Momentum: A Conversation on Challenges and Opportunities for Latinos
  • Lessons from the Past: The Evolution of Latino Political Leadership in California
  • Practicum Part I: Navigating & Overcoming Political Rhetoric to Champion Student Success
  • Practicum Part II: By the Numbers: Poll Analysis, Strategic Communications and Political Skill Building

This Institute is part of the NALEO Education Leadership Academy which aims to provide Arizona education policymakers with the enhanced capacity to strategize toward policy change and strengthen the governance skills they need to improve educational outcomes and narrow achievement gaps for Arizona’s students.

Arizona: A Key to Shaping the Nation’s Future

Latinos represent the second largest population group in the nation and continue to be a driving force of growth and influence across all aspects of American life. Arizona has the fourth largest share of Latino population in the country and as such, the future prosperity of the state, and the nation, are intrinsically tied to the success of the Latino community. Arizona is also a reflection of the changing demographics across the nation and is poised to play a critical role in shaping future national trends on critical issues, including education. This session will explore these shifts and identify key short and long-term opportunities policymakers may leverage to improve outcomes for Arizonans.

As legislators strive to ensure that their state education systems are equipped to prepare students for a 21st Century economy – this vision will be up against any number of competing priorities for the limited resources that exist.
